In past years we supported the Wounded Warrior Project but due to the less than desirable fundraising policies they have adopted we will now support VFW National Military Services Programs: “Unmet Needs”, “Operation Uplink” and “Military Assistance Program”. You can learn more about these great programs at www.vfw.org/Assistance/Family-Assistance/ . Thank you for any support you can show, whether that is just to come out and participate in the activities or spreading the word to all your family and friends.

We also need donations to help cover the cost of putting this event on. We have over $3000 to raise beforehand in order to meet all obligations and start raising money. Information can be provided for tax write off info upon request. Make checks payable to: VFW 5990 Men’s Auxiliary. We also need lots of raffle prizes to assure we can raise a record amount of money this year, anything from flat screens to oil changes will be greatly appreciated.

Brigader entry fee= $5 general admission + $10 horseshoe entry

Non Member entry fee= $10 general admission + $10 horseshoe entry only if you are playing

Once again, for the fifth year in a row, we present to you “The Redneck Olympix”. Back by popular demand are all of the same events we had last year. You can show up at 9:00 am and help get set up as you plug in your crockpot full of chili. Here is the sequence of the day.

If you can find someone to tell you where we are at you are more than welcome to attend.

Liability Waivers will be signed by everyone at gate!

9:00-4:30-Chili cook off -All chili is entered anonymously, please put your name under your pot. Every person who comes through the gate gets a poker chip to vote for their favorite chili. Pays 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place. In the event of a tie the pot will be split, for example 1^st and 2^nd will be combined and split.

12:00-2:30-Horseshoe tournament- Bring your own shoes and partner. Non walking doubles. Sign up at 10am cut off at 11:30am. Double elimination, all games are to 21 points, women, children and men over 70 can pitch from thirty feet. Additional rules will be covered at starting time. Pays 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd. /span>!

2:30-2:40-Pledge of allegiance

2:40-3:15-Red Neck Horseshoes-Each contestant gets one throw, closest toilet seat gets the prize, pays 1^st place

What can you really even say about this one

only. Contestants will pitch in order signed up.

3:15-4:00-Egg toss- Two person teams start 5 feet apart, take one step back per successful egg throw. There will be 4 teams participating at one time, winners of each four person heat move on to the next round, until one team remains. Contestants throw in order of sign up. Pays first place.

4:00-4:30-Speed Loadin-Seven rounds will be loaded into a 1911 .45 acp magazine, there will be up to seven people per heat. The winners of each heat will move on until two remain to load a 30 round AK clip. First person to set loaded magazine on table wins. We will be using live ammunition if you are not comfortable with this please do not sign up. Pays 1^st Place.

4:30-4:45-Chili judging- Winners will be called out and prizes will be awarded. Minimum $75.00 for first place depending on attendance.

4:45-5:30-5 person tug o war- sign up your team name, single elimination, teams will be placed on bracket in order signed up. Pays first place to all contestants on winning team.Mandatory to have one female per team.

5:30-6:00-Arm wrestling- single elimination, this is a right handed competition, all contestants will be placed on bracket in order signed up. If the women want to get in on it we can run another class immediately after. Pays 1st place.

6:00-7:15-Ladder golf- Side bets welcome, single elimination, blind draw format all games to 15 points. Top wrung worth 3 points, middle wrung worth 2 points, bottom wrung worth 1 point. Only one team can score per ladder. Ladders are approximately 30’ apart, alternate pitch, one bolo per person at a time. First pitch will be determined by flipping a coin or shoe. Pays 1^st place.

7:15-7:45-BYOBeer bong-All contestants drink one of their own beers out of a funnel. Fastest time wins. Contestants will go in order signed up. Pays 1^st place.

Chili cook off 9:00-4:30

Horseshoes 12:00-2:30

Redneck H.S. 2:30-3:15

Egg toss 3:15-4:00

Speed loading 4:00-4:30

Chili judging 4:30-4:45

5 man tug o war 4:45-5:30

Arm wrestling 5:30-6:00

After nearly a year of intensive emotional therapy to deal with last year’s crushing defeat, The loud mouths from Mescal have challenged us to a duel once again. I guess they think they will actually have a chance to beat us on their home turf after all those hours of daily affirmations in front of the mirror “I’m smart, I’m funny and dog gonit, I can pitch horseshoes”. Seriously though folks we have a title to defend! Let’s see a good turnout this year. We can car pool down to save a little gas money. Bring your swim gear and plenty of beer and Red Bull, Jason provides plenty of jager. Bring a side dish as well and don’t be stingy. Let’s kick some COMA ass!

CIRCLE S SALOON FUNDRAISER

The Circle S Saloon and Helping Hands will be hosting “Shane Huntley Day” this Saturday March 5th in Marana. Shane was recently diagnosed with cancer and will be needing our help to keep up on everyday expenses as well as medical. He is terminally ill so if you know Shane or would like to know a great guy come on out to the S to meet him and make his last days as easy as possible. It is a $10 bring your own partner with $500 dollars in the pot. We will be paying thru at least 4th place and possibly 5th if we get enough teams. It all kicks of with breakfast at 7am, horseshoe sign up at 11am and start at noon. Pool tournament to follow, two bands playing, killer raffles and a live auction.

Well it’s official… As of January 5th, 2011 the Party Hardy Eastsiders are an official part of our Tucson horseshoe pitching family. I met with No Ass on Saturday at Reid park and he is cut from the same cloth as all Brigaders. They will be attending the “A Day To Thank Our Heroes” event on January 29th so I want all of you at the VFW to meet them and give them a proper Brigade welcome.

Firelite Lounge Closes for good

I am sad to report that the Firelite will be demolished…. It’s sad to think we will never pitch there again

Where it all began…If it wasn’t for the Firelite this never would have happened.

Located at the corner of Wetmore and Hwy drive is a seedy little hole in the wall called the Firelite cafe and bar. It’s a local yokel hangout full of blue collar workin’ folk. Back in the day, Fire roller started attending the Sunday afternoon tournament on a weekly basis. He was enjoying it and invited me to come along. That was the first time I played shoes outside of a family reunion. The crowds were pretty good size back then. Lobo ran the tournaments, and he ran them well. Some days we would run three in an afternoon. The tournament was fun back then but we didn’t have a lot of support from the management. It was all on us to make things happen. Now days the new owner Rick is very willing and eager to help in any way possible. He has transformed the whole experience. He now runs the tournaments and plays in them. The Firelite has several tournaments per month. The Saturday tournament is $5 entry and the bar matches it. We play nonwalking doubles to 21 points. Women, children and men over 70 can pitch from 30?. Rick has a beer bar set up right next to the pits to help the games move along well and the main bar is only a short distance away for all of our hard drinkers. WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE LIFE EASIER

Alright I mentioned it in the Newsletter and now it’s time to start getting the ball rolling. This will be a spot for you to sign up if you want club members to help you get a job done at home that you just haven’t had time to do yourself.

Home repairs and clean up are easy if you have enough hands working together. Just buy a couple 30 packs of beer and hot dogs with all the fixins so the help doesn’t get hungry or thirsty while they bust ass and we’ll have lots of smiling faces throughout the project. (please have all building materials and a plan before we get there so we can maximize the effort)

-Painting (have plenty of rollers and brushes and don’t come up short on the paint… make sure your scaffolding is better than the pic above too)

-Remodeling (have a designated container or spot for all demolition material and specify what tools you will want people to bring)

-Roof repair (make sure you have all materials to get this done in one session if possible so we don’t have to leave the place open to rain)

-Tree trimming/yard work (if you don’t have a chain saw or proper trimming tools put the word out so we can bring our own)

-Automotive repair/refinish (we’ll just take this on a case by case basis to see if it is something we can help with or not, auto repair is not usually a group effort but if you have wet sanding or a big refinish project maybe we can learn from each other)
